Tested in a vacuum, Norton Antivirus (NAV) Enterprise Solution seemed the perfect anti-virus program, but when compared to the competition, it didnÆt come out the best. NAV had everything in the right place and most features were well thought out. Though we didnÆt receive any manuals with this software either, the help files seemed to be good enough, though the need for more documentation could be felt sometimes.

The installation was simple, though it took a bit more time than most of the other software. But considering the security strength, this minor quirk could be ignored.

NAVÆs interface was slightly better than McAfeeÆs, with both scheduling and standard scans (such as check all floppies) grouped together in one tabbed dialog box. Double-clicking the single taskbar tray icon launched this window.

NAVÆs configuration dialog box was also extremely well laid out and intuitive. Other smaller touches included quick access to updated definition files through the Internet; the best emergency-disk-creation routine and best rescue disks in general; and the default scanning setting to scan all files rather than just executables, since most new viruses can hide in many non-executable files these days.

Unfortunately, its total caught-virus-count was only 95.9 per cent, which wasnÆt bad, but when compared to Network AssociatesÆ McAfee VirusScan, it didnÆt come out the best.

NAV took a different and innovative approach to protecting you against e-mail viruses. It installed a background e-mail proxy which downloaded your e-mail, checked it and then let your e-mail program receive it.

This enabled catching the e-mail virus at the source itself. It didnÆt provide direct protection against downloaded viruses, though the moment you tried to open a downloaded file, it detected the virus.
